Transportation

We're so excited to celebrate with you in Japan! If it's your first time traveling internationally—or to Japan—don't worry. Here's the easiest way to get to Kyoto and the venue:

Step 1: Book your flight

Tokyo — We recommend Haneda (HND) for convenience, especially if you're staying a week or more to explore Tokyo. Narita (NRT) works too, but it takes longer to reach downtown Tokyo—and onward to Kyoto.

Osaka — Kansai International (KIX) is quickest if your trip is shorter or focused on Kyoto/Osaka.

Step 2: Get to Kyoto

From HND — Take the Shinkansen (bullet train, about 2.5 hours) from Tokyo Station to Kyoto.

From NRT — Take the Narita Express (N'EX) to Tokyo Station, then the Shinkansen to Kyoto (about 3.5 hours total).

From KIX — Take the JR Haruka Express (about 75 minutes) to Kyoto Station.

From Kyoto Station, taxis and local buses reach the Higashiyama area and our venue in roughly 15–25 minutes.

Step 3: Stay nearby

We've selected hotels at different price points near our events—see Where to Stay above. Book early; October is very busy in Kyoto!

Tip

Arrive 1–3 days early to adjust to jet lag and enjoy Japan. Use Google Maps to navigate trains, stations, and routes—it's the easiest way to get around.

On the Tokyo–Kyoto Shinkansen, if you can reserve a seat, try for a window on the right side (facing the direction of travel) for the best chance of Mt. Fuji views.

Getting Around

Kyoto is easy to get around on foot, by bus and subway, by train, and by taxi or rideshare. A few essentials:

Walking Temple districts and quieter neighborhoods are often best on foot—comfortable shoes help, and some areas are hilly.

Bus The city bus network reaches most major sights. IC cards work on most routes.

Subway & trains The municipal subway and JR lines connect the main areas. IC cards (ICOCA, Suica, etc.) work on most trains and buses.

Taxi & Uber Taxis are easy to find. Apps such as Uber typically dispatch a taxi through the app—handy for shorter hops.

IC cards & phone tap: On iPhone, you can add a Suica or similar IC card to Apple Wallet and tap your phone or Apple Watch at station gates and on readers—same as a physical card. Many shops and vending machines that take IC payments work the same way. On Android, Google Wallet supports a similar tap setup in many cases.
